PIA marks 25th Anniversary with contribution to Presidential Museum and Library
In a noteworthy demonstration of inter-agency solidarity and cooperation, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) will hand over its collection of speeches, recordings, images, and documents of President Benigno S. Aquino III to the Presidential Museum and Library (PML). The PIA’s contribution to the Presidential Museum and Library website (www.malacanang.gov.ph), will be symbolized by Director-General Jose A. Fabia turning over a symbolic disc to Undersecretary Manuel L. Quezon III of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO). This will take place on February 1, 2012, on the occasion of the silver anniversary of PIA.
The PIA head previously embarked on a presidential library and archives project during the closing months of the Arroyo administration. The effort was resumed in October 2011, for the purpose of compiling material on President Aquino from PIA’s attached agencies under the Presidential Communications Office (PCOO): the News and Information Bureau (NIB), Radio-Television Malacañang (RTVM), the Bureau of Broadcast Services (BBS), the Presidential Broadcast Staff (PBS), and National Broadcasting Network (NBN) 4. Secretary Herminio Coloma of the PCOO, and Director-General Fabia then directed that the effort culminate in the handing over of their efforts to the PCDSPO, as their contribution to the PML’s efforts.
The PIA joins other agencies such as the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), National Library; the libraries of the House of Representatives and the Senate, in the effort to bring issuance and historical data online.
Undersecretary Quezon says, “Secretary Coloma has always been an exponent of the principle of one team, one purpose. We are deeply appreciative of the PIA’s contribution, representing so much hard work, to the Presidential Museum and Library. As we all work in our own ways, to fulfill the President’s Social Contract with the Filipino People, this sharing of resources provides a sterling example of cooperation and public spiritedness. Director-General Fabia’s team welcomed our team with open arms as they undertook the seamless handover of materials for use in the PML website. We are proud to banner their cooperative contributions to digitizing vital documents.”
The digitized historical documents will contribute to the fulfillment of the mandate of the Presidential Museum and Library, and the efforts of the PCDSPO to fortify institutional memory, as mandated by Executive Order No. 4, series of 2010. The PML and the Official Gazette (OG) (ww.gov.ph) are in turn working to bring the entries corpus of executive, legislative, and judicial issuances of the Philippines from 1901 to the present, online. This is in keeping with the President’s promotion of the codification of laws and issuances, and the administration’s Open Governance Initiative commitments.
The ceremony starts at 10:00 am at the PIA lobby. The ceremony will feature the launch of PIA’s new website, art gallery, and public-private partnerships to bring timely alerts and give citizens an opportunity to provide feedback on government programs.
